Max Calderan, an Italian explorer, has become the first man to complete a solo journey across the Rub' Al Khali desert, better known as the Empty Quarter.
Rub’ Al Khali is the largest sand desert in the world. It covers about 650,000 square kilometres, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the UAE and Yemen.
The Italian, 52, trekked through 1,100 km of gruelling desert and crossed sand dunes as tall as 300 metres.
He started his journey on January 18 in Saudi Arabia and reached the UAE on February 3.
Throughout the 16-day trek, Mr Calderan experienced hallucinations as the temperature reached 36°C. But he finished his trek four days earlier than planned.
Mr Calderan has a history of taking on challenging expeditions but he found crossing the Empty Quarter the most gruelling.
“These were the biggest dunes I’ve ever faced," he said. "It was extremely challenging but I just closed my eyes, reassuring myself that I would finish this."
The terrain was brutal and barren.
“The only solution is to climb the dunes, pray to find the right path and go beyond them,” Mr Calderan said.
It also appears to be lifeless, with none of the wild animals and droppings that he found during his earlier treks.
“Rub' Al Khali isn’t about the distance to cover. It’s an extreme environment that nobody has done before.”
Mr Calderan was not scared of wild cats or deadly scorpions on the way, but of the desert itself.
The toughest part was the last 200km.
“It was the first time in my life I prayed to get out of the desert safe,” Mr Calderan said.
“This journey isn’t about physical ability but the way one handles difficult situations. This is what makes a difference."
The wind often covered his tracks and his GPS lost signals, making it hard to contact his support team for hours.
Several celebrated explorers have crossed shorter sections on camels or in off-road vehicles, but no one has traversed this 1,000km-plus stretch.
The Empty Quarter is one of world's most forbidding deserts. Even migratory birds fly hundreds of miles out of their way to avoid it.

TOUCH RULES
Touch is derived from rugby league. Teams consist of up to 14 players with a maximum of six on the field at any time.
Teams can make as many substitutions as they want during the 40 minute matches.
Similar to rugby league, the attacking team has six attempts - or touches - before possession changes over.
A touch is any contact between the player with the ball and a defender, and must be with minimum force.
After a touch the player performs a “roll-ball” - similar to the play-the-ball in league - stepping over or rolling the ball between the feet.
At the roll-ball, the defenders have to retreat a minimum of five metres.
A touchdown is scored when an attacking player places the ball on or over the score-line.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Coffee: black death or elixir of life?
It is among the greatest health debates of our time; splashed across newspapers with contradicting headlines - is coffee good for you or not?
Depending on what you read, it is either a cancer-causing, sleep-depriving, stomach ulcer-inducing black death or the secret to long life, cutting the chance of stroke, diabetes and cancer.
The latest research - a study of 8,412 people across the UK who each underwent an MRI heart scan - is intended to put to bed (caffeine allowing) conflicting reports of the pros and cons of consumption.
The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation, contradicted previous findings that it stiffens arteries, putting pressure on the heart and increasing the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke, leading to warnings to cut down.
Numerous studies have recognised the benefits of coffee in cutting oral and esophageal cancer, the risk of a stroke and cirrhosis of the liver.
The benefits are often linked to biologically active compounds including caffeine, flavonoids, lignans, and other polyphenols, which benefit the body. These and othetr coffee compounds regulate genes involved in DNA repair, have anti-inflammatory properties and are associated with lower risk of insulin resistance, which is linked to type-2 diabetes.
But as doctors warn, too much of anything is inadvisable. The British Heart Foundation found the heaviest coffee drinkers in the study were most likely to be men who smoked and drank alcohol regularly.
Excessive amounts of coffee also unsettle the stomach causing or contributing to stomach ulcers. It also stains the teeth over time, hampers absorption of minerals and vitamins like zinc and iron.
It also raises blood pressure, which is largely problematic for people with existing conditions.
So the heaviest drinkers of the black stuff - some in the study had up to 25 cups per day - may want to rein it in.
