The electricity utilities of Abu Dhabi and Dubai have signed a deal to expand water interconnectivity between the emirates, to help establish strategic water reserves in the UAE.

Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding for water connections between the emirates. “It strengthens the cooperation between Adwea and Dewa as this strategic national project will contribute to improving the reliability of water systems in Dubai and Abu Dhabi,” said Saeed Al Tayer, chief executive and managing director of Dewa.

The country’s energy ministry said in June that it had produced a draft of the water security strategy in the country for 2036, in cooperation with the federal and local authorities focused on water affairs. The strategy will cover the entire UAE’s water supply chain with a priority for strategic production of water resources, storage, transport networks and interconnectivity among the seven emirates.

Mr Al Tayer added: “[The agreement] supports our strategy to enhance the efficiency of the water network by working together to achieve the strategic objectives of the federal government of the UAE and the recommendations of the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.”

Adwea and Dewa will now work out details to set up a tender to choose a consultancy, which will carry out the feasibility studies required to start construction on the network expansion.
