United Technologies is in talks to merge its aerospace unit with US military contractor Raytheon in a deal that would create a global defence giant, according to the Wall Street Journal.
If the discussions progress, the all-stock deal may be announced within the coming days, the newspaper reported on Saturday, citing a person familiar with the matter. The companies have a combined market value of $166 billion (Dh609bn). A successful deal would create the second-biggest Western aerospace defence company, behind Boeing but ahead of Airbus, according to Bloomberg Intelligence.
United Technologies' chief officer Greg Hayes is expected to lead the new company, while Raytheon's chief Thomas Kennedy would become chairman of the combined entity, the Journal reported.
The deal would create a powerhouse offering products ranging from Patriot missiles to engines fitted in Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet.
The merger would not impact the planned spin offs at United Technologies, according to the Journal. The company had previously planned to sell its Carrier air conditioning business and Otis elevator division.
The deal with Raytheon may pressure rival General Electric, which competes with United Technologies for commercial aerospace clients, to also seek scale.

How to join and use Abu Dhabi’s public libraries
• There are six libraries in Abu Dhabi emirate run by the Department of Culture and Tourism, including one in Al Ain and Al Dhafra.
• Libraries are free to visit and visitors can consult books, use online resources and study there. Most are open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, closed on Fridays and have variable hours on Saturdays, except for Qasr Al Watan which is open from 10am to 8pm every day.
• In order to borrow books, visitors must join the service by providing a passport photograph, Emirates ID and a refundable deposit of Dh400. Members can borrow five books for three weeks, all of which are renewable up to two times online.
• If users do not wish to pay the fee, they can still use the library’s electronic resources for free by simply registering on the website. Once registered, a username and password is provided, allowing remote access.

Libya's Gold
UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.
