KIEV // Pro-Russian separatists shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets on Wednesday in the same eastern region where Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed. Rebels downed two Su-25 fighters in the Donetsk region, said Oleksiy Dmytrashkovsky, a defence ministry spokesman. They were hit from a missile-defence system over the village of Dmytrivka. Another ministry spokesman, Andriy Lysenko, said the planes were flying at an altitude of 5,200 metres when they were brought down by a “powerful” anti-aircraft missile. The pilots ejected and their whereabouts are unknown. If verified, it raises the question of whether President Vladimir Putin’s military is still allowing the pro-Russian rebels access to weaponry capable of downing fighters. “This shows the rebels have a pretty sophisticated anti- aircraft capacity,” said Karl-Heinz Kamp, academic director at the German government’s Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin. * Bloomberg
