DUBAI // Dubai police arrested two men attempting to sell two kilograms of heroin estimated to have a market value worth more than Dh200,000. An official at the Dubai police's Anti-Drugs and Narcotics Department said the men, who were both African nationals, were arrested in the first week of October during a business deal on the main road in the Naif area in Deira. "We have received information that one of the suspects was in possession of drugs and after a five day surveillance, CID officers arrested the man and his accomplice, a buyer he was intending to sell the drugs to," he said. Police searched the two men, identified as GK and ASA, and found drugs in a bag carried by GK. Police said the drugs were carefully wrapped in sheets. The men admitted to selling drugs, police said. Both suspects had overstayed their visit visas. One kilogram of heroin has a market value between Dh70,000 and Dh120,000, according to police. Furthermore, police said the drugs were brought in from an Asian country and were to be sold between dealers and exported to other countries. "The drugs were intended for export and not to be sold and consumed in this country. This is a big quantity and there is no market for it here," said the official. rbaker@thenational.ae

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is the most popular virtual currency in the world. It was created in 2009 as a new way of paying for things that would not be subject to central banks that are capable of devaluing currency. A Bitcoin itself is essentially a line of computer code. It's signed digitally when it goes from one owner to another. There are sustainability concerns around the cryptocurrency, which stem from the process of "mining" that is central to its existence.

The "miners" use computers to make complex calculations that verify transactions in Bitcoin. This uses a tremendous amount of energy via computers and server farms all over the world, which has given rise to concerns about the amount of fossil fuel-dependent electricity used to power the computers.
