DUBAI // A human trafficker who raped a 20-year-old woman and forced her into prostitution was jailed for five years yesterday. SA, 42, a tailor from Bangladesh, was convicted at the Dubai Criminal Court of First Instance on charges of human trafficking, rape and illegal confinement. The victim, also from Bangladesh, said she was offered employment in Dubai by a woman in Bangladesh in exchange for money. Her husband and mother raised the cash and a month later she was given a visa and a ticket to Dubai. Records show she travelled from Bangladesh to Dubai on October 15 last year.
SA collected her at the airport and took her to a flat in the Hamdan district of Deira, where she was beaten and told she would be forced into prostitution. He locked her up for three days and raped her, court records show. Authorities were alerted after she screamed from a window in the room where she was held captive. A police patrol officer said he went to investigate, found SA in front of the house and asked him to open the door. The woman was found locked up and told officers of her ordeal.
