The Professional Fighters League plans to expand its footprint in Dubai and offer pathways to more local fighters to compete, says the organisation's chairman and founder Donn Davis.
The PFL's inaugural Road to Dubai took place on January 25 in front of a sold-out Coca-Cola Arena, highlighted by the Bellator lightweight title contest between champion Umar Nurmagomedov and challenger Paul Hughes.
The Russian extended his unbeaten record with a unanimous decision over Hughes, but the 10-fight card was notable for giving a platform to local fighters like Omar Hadi Al Hussaini, who became the first Emirati to win in the PFL, securing a unanimous decision over Ruel Panales of the Philippines.
The Road to Dubai was the latest installment of the PFL's progression in the Middle East, coming three months after their signature event - PFL Super Fights - in Riyadh that saw Francis Ngannou beat heavyweight champion Renan Ferreira following a three-year hiatus from mixed martial arts.
“Huge success," Davis told The National of the PFL's first foray into the Middle East. "We were the first MMA [world promotion] in Saudi Arabia and the first MMA ever in Dubai, how can you have a better year than to have two firsts like that?"
Davis said he "absolutely" envisaged more Emirati fights following in Al Hussaini's path of fighting under the PFL banner.
"One it’s good business locally, and two it’s good business globally. Great fighters can come from anywhere – you just have to give them opportunity,” Davis added.
“It’s always about your own local heroes and own local stars, whether it’s UAE, Saudi, Qatar, Egypt, Morocco – everybody wants to say ‘I want a route for my own’.”
In November, the PFL signed a multi-year partnership with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism and the Dubai Sports Council to host the Champions Series World Title event, which will see the promotion's biggest names compete in the emirate.
Davis said their were plans to stage "great mega events on a global scale" but also "have events regionally" with plans to bring a PFL Middle East to Dubai this year.
“Big fights are happening in the Middle East, there is the money to support those. So it used to be Las Vegas now it’s the Middle East," Davis added.
"But when you talk about fighters it’s still a developing region: you need coaches, you need camps, you need other fighters to sharpen your skills – that is still developing in the region.”
When asked if heavyweight champion Ngannou could fight in the UAE, Davis said: “Look, it’s possible. Francis’ return to MMA after three years was in Riyadh. So those fights could happen in Dubai, could happen Abu Dhabi, could happen in the UAE.”

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.
It was founded in 2018 and originally called the Brexit Party.

Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.

Zakat definitions
Zakat: an Arabic word meaning ‘to cleanse’ or ‘purification’.
Nisab: the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. Traditionally, the nisab threshold was 87.48 grams of gold, or 612.36 grams of silver. The monetary value of the nisab therefore varies by current prices and currencies.
Zakat Al Mal: the ‘cleansing’ of wealth, as one of the five pillars of Islam; a spiritual duty for all Muslims meeting the ‘nisab’ wealth criteria in a lunar year, to pay 2.5 per cent of their wealth in alms to the deserving and needy.
Zakat Al Fitr: a donation to charity given during Ramadan, before Eid Al Fitr, in the form of food. Every adult Muslim who possesses food in excess of the needs of themselves and their family must pay two qadahs (an old measure just over 2 kilograms) of flour, wheat, barley or rice from each person in a household, as a minimum.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US' most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was first created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out projectiles, namely ballistic missiles, as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles both inside and outside of the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 93 miles above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then deployed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.
