Home team Orlando Pirates snatched a 1-1 draw with defending champions Al Ahly of Egypt in the CAF Champions League first leg match in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Seven-time champions Ahly went in front after 14 minutes through a free kick delivered by their durable campaigner Mohamed Aboutrika.
Thabo Matlaba fired home the vital equaliser for Pirates in full time stoppage time to leave the second leg final wide open.
“We have something to play for. A 1-1 draw at home not the greatest result, but I believe we can score there in Egypt,” said Pirates coach Roger de Sa.
“We will attack in the second leg and hope for the best.”
Ahly coach Mohamed Youssef said, “A 1-1 draw away from home is a fair result. There is still another 90 minutes to be played in Cairo.
“We hope to change our approach at home and we will win.”
Ahmed Abdul Zaher was on target for Ahly after 51 minutes, when he was set up by Aboutrika, but it was disallowed for offside.
Home team Pirates, seeking a second Champions League trophy 18 years after their first, dominated possession and were full of running and spirit.
But Ahly showed class and experience to frustrate their hosts.
Pirates, who beat the Egyptian giants 3-0 in a group game, had few chances at Ahly’s goal in this absorbing contest.
First, Lennox Bacela was denied by Wael Gomaa in the 57th minute when the striker dashed into the 18-yard box and his final shot was blocked for a corner by the 38-year-old Ahly skipper.
And then moments later, Ahly goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy was forced to make a big save after Andile Jali let fly from a good distance.
Pirates, cheered on by a packed Orlando Stadium, took the game to their opponents from the first blast of the whistle.
The home team were restricted to shooting from distance with the likes of Rooi Mahamutsa, Oupa Manyisa and Matlaba all trying their luck from long range.
The Buccaneers were camped inside the Ahly half, enjoying more of the ball, but just could not find their way to the goal of the defending champions.
In a rare Ahly attack, Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa parried a fierce shot by Zaher for a corner in first half stoppage time.
With Ahly on target to take the first leg honours Pirates grabbed a share of the spoils when Matlaba struck in injury time of an absorbing contest.
The return leg final will be played in Cairo next Sunday.
The overall winners of this final will pocket a prize money of $1.5 million (Dh55m) and represent Africa at the 2013 Fifa Club World Cup in Morocco in December.

• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

Types of policy
Term life insurance: this is the cheapest and most-popular form of life cover. You pay a regular monthly premium for a pre-agreed period, typically anything between five and 25 years, or possibly longer. If you die within that time, the policy will pay a cash lump sum, which is typically tax-free even outside the UAE. If you die after the policy ends, you do not get anything in return. There is no cash-in value at any time. Once you stop paying premiums, cover stops.
Whole-of-life insurance: as its name suggests, this type of life cover is designed to run for the rest of your life. You pay regular monthly premiums and in return, get a guaranteed cash lump sum whenever you die. As a result, premiums are typically much higher than one term life insurance, although they do not usually increase with age. In some cases, you have to keep up premiums for as long as you live, although there may be a cut-off period, say, at age 80 but it can go as high as 95. There are penalties if you don’t last the course and you may get a lot less than you paid in.
Critical illness cover: this pays a cash lump sum if you suffer from a serious illness such as cancer, heart disease or stroke. Some policies cover as many as 50 different illnesses, although cancer triggers by far the most claims. The payout is designed to cover major financial responsibilities such as a mortgage or children’s education fees if you fall ill and are unable to work. It is cost effective to combine it with life insurance, with the policy paying out once if you either die or suffer a serious illness.
Income protection: this pays a replacement income if you fall ill and are unable to continue working. On the best policies, this will continue either until you recover, or reach retirement age. Unlike critical illness cover, policies will typically pay out for stress and musculoskeletal problems such as back trouble.

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950
