In the run-up to this year's World Environment Day, The National photographer Chris Whiteoak and I were at Louvre Abu Dhabi at 5am with a team from The National Aquarium.
The early wake-up call allowed us to witness the retrieval of 10 sea turtles being rehabilitated in a special sanctuary known as turtle lagoon. It is the last stop on the rehabilitation journey for many turtles, where they experience Arabian Gulf water, sunlight and seasonal changes.
The theme of this year's World Environment Day is “beat plastic pollution”.
Lewis Cocks, curator at The National Aquarium, told us that many turtles mistake single-use plastics bags for food, such as jellyfish.
On June 1, Abu Dhabi celebrated the third anniversary of its single-use plastic bag ban.
President Sheikh Mohamed on Thursday set out the UAE's efforts to champion "meaningful climate action" to help protect the planet for future generations.
The UAE leader pledged that the Emirates would continue to work with the international community to advance a sustainable vision for the future.
In her World Environment Day message, Dr Amna Al Dahak, the UAE's Minister of Climate Change and Environment, shared that at a federal level, starting on January 1, the UAE will implement a comprehensive ban on the import, production and trade of single-use plastic products. This builds on the phased approach initiated in 2024 with the ban on plastic bags. "Let us renew our focus on the ecosystems that sustain us," she said.

Landmark UAE climate law aims to curb emissions and boost net-zero ambitions
A new UAE climate law that requires companies to keep emission levels in check or face fines has been hailed as a “pivotal shift” for the country.
Federal Decree-Law No 11 of 2024 on the Reduction of the Effects of Climate Change, which came into effect on May 30, mandates emissions reporting and climate adaptation measures across all sectors, from heavy industry to health care and energy, as well as small private enterprises in free zones. For the first time, climate action is not simply encouraged in the UAE, it is legally required.

A marine heatwave in the North Atlantic Ocean in 2023 was caused by record-breaking weak winds combined with increased solar radiation due to a lack of clouds – all on the back of continued climate change, scientists found.

Jargon buster
Cold stunning: This is a condition where sea turtles become weak and inactive due to exposure to cold water temperatures.
When water temperatures drop, sea turtles struggle to regulate their body temperature. If temperatures remain low, they can become stranded, vulnerable to predators or suffer from secondary health problems.
