Sometimes, the greatest pleasure you can experience is fulfilling the promise of a lifetime.
With nearly two million pilgrims arriving in Makkah for Hajj this week, a small group of horse riders have completed an extraordinary journey. They retraced a route to the city taken by Andalusian Muslims more than 500 years ago.
Abdelkader Harkassi Aidi, Tarek Rodriguez and Abdallah Rafael Hernandez Mancha covered 6,500km over nearly seven months.
The idea came from Hernandez Mancha, a Spanish teacher who made a promise 36 years ago that if he passed a critical exam, he would become a Muslim and travel to Makkah on horseback to perform Hajj. He kept his word, embraced Islam and has now fulfilled the last part of his vow.

Gazan boy's need for bone marrow transplant might have saved entire family
Falling ill with a rare immune condition may have led Gazan child Oday Al Jedba, 12, to save the lives of his entire family, as it resulted in their evacuation to the UAE.
They had been told that Oday would be treated in the UAE and was set to board one of the first evacuation flights. “We sent him on the flight not sure if we would ever see him again,” said his father, Khaled Al Jedba, 38.
Doctors at Yas Clinic in Abu Dhabi determined he needed a bone marrow transplant. For almost a year, the UAE worked tirelessly to bring the rest of his family to Abu Dhabi. Oday’s sister, Doaa, 15, was found to be a match.
“The day we all arrived to the UAE, I bent down to the floor to kiss the ground and thank God,” said Mr Al Jedba. “We survived. We all survived.”
On March 10, Oday underwent the transplant operation at Yas Clinic and is now recovering at Emirates Humanitarian City.

Abu Dhabi's mission to eliminate single-use plastic bags is offering a safer passage to sea turtles navigating the emirate's waters.
The emirate introduced its single-use plastic ban on June 1, 2022, in a major push to protect the environment and greatly reduce plastic pollution in the sea.
The campaign has brought significant benefits, with an estimated 360 million plastic bags taken out of circulation by the end of 2024.

TOUCH RULES
Touch is derived from rugby league. Teams consist of up to 14 players with a maximum of six on the field at any time.
Teams can make as many substitutions as they want during the 40 minute matches.
Similar to rugby league, the attacking team has six attempts - or touches - before possession changes over.
A touch is any contact between the player with the ball and a defender, and must be with minimum force.
After a touch the player performs a “roll-ball” - similar to the play-the-ball in league - stepping over or rolling the ball between the feet.
At the roll-ball, the defenders have to retreat a minimum of five metres.
A touchdown is scored when an attacking player places the ball on or over the score-line.

What is blockchain?
Blockchain is a form of distributed ledger technology, a digital system in which data is recorded across multiple places at the same time. Unlike traditional databases, DLTs have no central administrator or centralised data storage. They are transparent because the data is visible and, because they are automatically replicated and impossible to be tampered with, they are secure.
The main difference between blockchain and other forms of DLT is the way data is stored as ‘blocks’ – new transactions are added to the existing ‘chain’ of past transactions, hence the name ‘blockchain’. It is impossible to delete or modify information on the chain due to the replication of blocks across various locations.
Blockchain is mostly associated with cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Due to the inability to tamper with transactions, advocates say this makes the currency more secure and safer than traditional systems. It is maintained by a network of people referred to as ‘miners’, who receive rewards for solving complex mathematical equations that enable transactions to go through.
However, one of the major problems that has come to light has been the presence of illicit material buried in the Bitcoin blockchain, linking it to the dark web.
Other blockchain platforms can offer things like smart contracts, which are automatically implemented when specific conditions from all interested parties are reached, cutting the time involved and the risk of mistakes. Another use could be storing medical records, as patients can be confident their information cannot be changed. The technology can also be used in supply chains, voting and has the potential to used for storing property records.

Financial considerations before buying a property
Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. This means they not only pay less in interest but their monthly costs are also reduced. Ideally, the monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 20 per cent of the purchaser’s total household income, says Carol Glynn, founder of Conscious Finance Coaching.
“If it’s a rental property, plan for the property to have periods when it does not have a tenant. Ensure you have enough cash set aside to pay the mortgage and other costs during these periods, ideally at least six months,” she says.
Also, shop around for the best mortgage interest rate. Understand the terms and conditions, especially what happens after any introductory periods, Ms Glynn adds.

Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.

What is graphene?
Graphene is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon.
It is 200 times more resistant than steel and five times lighter than aluminum.
It conducts electricity better than any other material at room temperature.
It is thought that graphene could boost the useful life of batteries by 10 per cent.
Graphene can also detect cancer cells in the early stages of the disease.
The material was first discovered when Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov were 'playing' with graphite at the University of Manchester in 2004.
