Abu Dhabi Country Club to undergo redevelopment as it suspends most operations

Abu Dhabi Country Club, formerly known as the Abu Dhabi Health and Fitness Club, will suspend many of its services at the end of the month, including closing its dining establishments and potentially stopping its group fitness classes.

An email sent to members earlier this month stated it “will undergo redevelopment” and that to do this “certain operations will be suspended starting on January 31".

The memo says that only the main gym, tennis courts and studios in the main building will remain in operation for the time being. However, this means that everything else including restaurants on site such as Sardinia and Mondo Pizzeria, the Club Spa, the sports school, the group fitness building and the squash courts will be closed.

The country club, which is located in the Mushrif area, was established in 1999 and was one of the first health and fitness clubs in the city.

In addition to a gym, when the club opened it also included indoor and outdoor swimming pools, bowling, spa facilities and sports courts for tennis, squash, football and basketball.

In 2015, the space underwent renovations which included opening a massive 2,000-square-metre Thalgo Spa (which later became the Club Spa). As well as being a fitness and lifestyle space, the country club has also been vital to the UAE's sports scene.

In 2004, the ADCC women’s football team was established as part of the club's efforts to promote and develop women's sports in the UAE. However, their home games are held off-site at 321 Sports on Hudayriyat Island.

Last year, the team became the first Arab club to reach the inaugural AFC Women’s Champions League, which features the top 12 women’s football teams in Asia, split into three groups. They’ll next play in the quarterfinal match of the tournament on March 22.

• Increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 but given “turbulent times it may be necessary to go faster”

• Prioritise a shift towards working with AI and autonomous systems

• Invest in the resilience of military space systems.

• Number of active reserves should be increased by 20%

• More F-35 fighter jets required in the next decade
