August is wrapping up with a handful of events, from a Nickelodeon mall show in Al Ain to a nostalgic Bollywood concert in Dubai. Emirati Women's Day falls this week too, with special events running for the annual commemoration.
Here, The National rounds up seven things to do around the Emirates, from August 26 to September 1.
Monday, August 26
Start the week with an immersive activity featuring the robots from the Transformers franchise – from Bumblebee to Optimus Prime – at Nakheel Mall on The Palm. Expect games and challenges, including code-breaking sessions and a virtual showdown. Merchandise is being sold at Virgin Megastore and Toys R Us as well. There are also opportunities to win prizes, including tickets to the coming Transformers One movie.

Tuesday, August 27
Families in Al Ain can head to Bawadi Mall to see SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward and other characters from the popular cartoon in a 30-minute stage show called I Heart Dancing, which is on until Sunday.
The daily performances are designed for young audiences with humour, music and movement that capture the essence of the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants series. Aside from the shows, children can also interact with the characters in meet-and-greet sessions.

Wednesday, August 28
Celebrate Emirati Women's Day at the Bassam Freiha Art Foundation on Saadiyat Island, where Emirati artist Najat Makki will lead an interactive workshop, guiding participants on a creative journey with themes of empowerment, identity and heritage. Visitors will be able to dive deep into the rich cultural tapestry of the UAE, using various artistic mediums to express their personal interpretations of what it means to be an Emirati woman today.
The workshop will result in a collaborative art piece, which will be displayed at the venue's Annex Gallery. The event is open to women of all ages and backgrounds. All materials will be provided and no prior art experience is necessary. Email info@bfaf.ae to secure a spot.

Thursday, August 29

Malaysian culture will be centre stage at My Square, a bistro-style restaurant at DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai, as the venue celebrates the country's independence day.
My Square will be adorned with Malaysian flags, while authentic dishes will be served at the buffet table, including satays, beef rendang and lontong sayur (a traditional rice dish), while desserts such as cendol (iced sweet dessert) and durian cakes will also be available. There will also be live cultural performances to celebrate the occasion.

Saturday, August 31
Bollywood fans can listen to playback singer Shaan's melodious set live at the Coca-Cola Arena. As part of the Live Love Laugh Shaan Se concert, the popular Indian artist will perform hits such as Chaand Sifarish, Jab Se Tere Naina and Woh Ladki Hai Kahaan, among many others from his three-decade career.

Sunday, September 1
Market Island, pegged as the largest food hall in the Middle East with more than 50 food outlets, has opened in Dubai Festival City Mall. It contains restaurants such as Allo Beirut, Scarlet’s Bakery and Homer Lobster as well as newcomers to the UAE such as Pasta Art, Gelato Ado and Nikkei Sushi, a Japanese outlet by La Barra creator and chef Roberto Segura.
Food aside, the venue also hosts an array of activities and entertainment every weekend, from DJ performances to specialised workshops for both adults and children.

When Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi
Known as The Lady of Arabic Song, Umm Kulthum performed in Abu Dhabi on November 28, 1971, as part of celebrations for the fifth anniversary of the accession of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.
Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters
The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.
Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.
A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.
The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.
The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.
Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.
Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment
But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
