The Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has topped the first Forbes India Celebrity 100, with annual estimated earnings last year of US$37.7 million (Dh132.5m). In the list - a ranking of the country's biggest entertainers based on income and popularity - fellow actor Salman Khan came in second with estimated earnings of $30m (Dh110.2m). In third place was India's cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni with $25m (Dh91.8m). "Both Salman Khan and Dhoni are ahead of SRK in terms of popularity and fame," the magazine said, "But 'King Khan' came out top courtesy of his earning power." * AP

Jimmy Shergill hopes for popular surge for Punjabi film industry
The actor Jimmy Shergill, who has starred in both Bollywood and Punjabi films, is hoping for a surge in popularity for Punjabi cinema. "Punjabi cinema should be even bigger because we have Punjabis all across the world. I think regional languages have been doing well but Punjabi films have now started getting a decent opening," said the 42-year-old. "But I still feel it is the tip of the iceberg. I still feel there is a lot of audience out there who don't watch our Punjabi films even though they are Punjabi." The actor, who has starred in Punjabi films such as Mel Karade Rabba and Dharti, will soon hit the screens again in Rangeelay, which features him and Neha Dhupia in the lead roles. * IANS

Anxiety and work stress major factors
Anxiety, work stress and social isolation are all factors in the recogised rise in mental health problems.
A study UAE Ministry of Health researchers published in the summer also cited struggles with weight and illnesses as major contributors.
Its authors analysed a dozen separate UAE studies between 2007 and 2017. Prevalence was often higher in university students, women and in people on low incomes.
One showed 28 per cent of female students at a Dubai university reported symptoms linked to depression. Another in Al Ain found 22.2 per cent of students had depressive symptoms - five times the global average.
It said the country has made strides to address mental health problems but said: “Our review highlights the overall prevalence of depressive symptoms and depression, which may long have been overlooked."
Prof Samir Al Adawi, of the department of behavioural medicine at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, who was not involved in the study but is a recognised expert in the Gulf, said how mental health is discussed varies significantly between cultures and nationalities.
“The problem we have in the Gulf is the cross-cultural differences and how people articulate emotional distress," said Prof Al Adawi.
“Someone will say that I have physical complaints rather than emotional complaints. This is the major problem with any discussion around depression."
