Kevin Dean, an artist and designer from England, was invited by Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed, the then Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE, to design the walls and sahan (courtyard) of the mosque over a decade ago. The designer, who had no idea of the scale of the project, was initially stumped when he saw the vast expanse of the sahan when he visited for the first time in 2003.
